Jessica Welsh ’14

JessI am a senior English major and Film minor from Weston, CT, although I spent nine years growing up in the UK. I am a fan of any good story well told, whether it’s a book, movie, TV show, play or graphic novel; indie or mainstream; classic or newly released.

My favorite writer-director is probably Woody Allen (Manhattan, Purple Rose of Cairo, and Love and Death are my top picks), but I also enjoy the Coen brothers, Tim Burton, and John Hughes. Other films I’d rank in my Top 10 are Withnail & I, The Full Monty, It’s A Wonderful Life and A Philadelphia Story. I’m also partial to animated films, particularly if the Pixar team is involved. Generally, my favorite movies are comedies with a heart or witty love stories.

With television, I also usually gravitate towards comedy, although my friends got me into Game Of Thrones this summer. My favorite TV show of all time is the UK version of The Office, though I’d also put in a good word for 30 Rock, Freaks and Geeks, and Seinfeld, as well as two British sitcoms called Miranda and Peep Show. I am an avid reader too – anything by Mark Twain, Jane Austen or P.G. Wodehouse is up my alley. After I graduate I hope to be a screenwriter, television writer, or children’s book author – whatever I do, I know I always want to be around stories!
